"My Obsession"

Performed by Skillet

The idea for this video came as a request, through my guestbook, from Todd Rohrer (who is responsible for the main graphics for the site).

I am a big Skillet fan, so I thought I'd look into the song. Turns out...the song was on the same cd as "Savior", which is one of my favorite songs of theirs, so I ended up just buying the cd :)

(Note: "Savior" will probably end up in video form in the future :)

Todd suggested the theme of the video be about the love triangle (which really doesn't exist in the books, but is a fun idea anyway, heh) between Harry, Hermione, and Ron.

I listened to the song about a bazillions times and finally came up with the basis of what I was going to focus on...my opinion that Ron likes Hermione, Hermione likes Harry, and Harry likes Hermione. So, that's how I edited it...

And, the lyrics in the verses matched it perfectly :)

I gave Ron the first verse, Hermione the second, and had Harry wrap it up.

When the lyrics were talking about someone else, I knew I had to fix it in a way that the viewer could understand who was being referred to, so I incorporated the chroma keying effect.

Chroma keying is something you just have to play around with it until you get it the way you like it. I had to mess with the sizing and placement, and am pretty pleased with the way each shot of it turned out. I think it helps you understand what each character is thinking (or what I'm making them think :).

In the middle of the song, there is a great drum sequence on the downbeats and kind of echos away that I wanted to capitalize on. I knew they would almost be too short to put actual video in, so I went with the still pictures so you would have more time to see the shots. To emphasize the fading of the drumbeat, I faded each shot to black and would fade up on the next one. Then, during the extremely fast part, I wanted it to have a different feel, so this (even though the rhythms are even SHORTER), I decided to go with video clips.

The fast part took me for, rockin', EVER, but it was worth it! Some of the shots seem to drag, but overall, I'm happy with the turnout.

Right before Harry's verse, there is a guitar part that leads up to a faster, louder part of the song where the lead singer screams a lot :) In order for the video to build to that point, I chose to have Harry in slow-motion, running in the chamber, which to me, makes the angrier, more aggressive parts...well, angrier and more aggressive.

Once I got to the ending, I had pretty much used every shot I could possibly use and was struggling to finish...but, then I remembered the scene in Chamber of Secrets when the trio are sitting at the table and Harry hears people talking about him...I thought that just exemplified the whole idea the video was pushing...that in the end, Harry knows something is up between Ron and Hermione, while they just kind of play it off as nothing...

I chose to end it back in the blurriness to keep consistent with the beginning.

My personal favorite moments of this video are:

1) The blurry effects at the beginning...I thought the sounds at the start of the song sounded like it was underwater, so making the video blurry and then becoming clear was the best way I could manage to accomplish that look:)

2) The chroma-keyed shots...the best of them are of Ron walking with Hermione keyed in, walking beside him...the shot of Hermione with Harry breathing by her, and the shot of Hermione with Harry falling from the sky...

3) The shot of Ron and Hermione in the snow, overlooking the Shrieking Shack because I sped it up and it just goes so well with the music.

4) The moment with the trio, sitting at the table, Hermione does this quick smirk that landed on the beat...when I first laid the video clip on the timeline, that's where it fell and I liked it so much, I kept it :)

This is the first video in which, I had some fun video at the end, during the credits. Previously, I had just had text, crediting my sources...The scene I used goes along with the theme of Hermione being into Harry, excited to meet him and not really paying any attention to Ron. (Sorry, Ron fans, but well, it is the way it is :)

I'm really proud of this video. It's won me a lot of awards, but more imporantly, it's given me a lot more confidence in challenging myself to push the limits and edit out of the box.
